Common limitations

  • Limited fonts: not every email client displays the font you've chosen. Outlook and Gmail often automatically replace fonts with their own default. Xendy always uses web-safe fonts and automatically switches to Arial or Helvetica if your chosen font is not available.
  • No interactive features: dropdown menus, scrollbars, or moving elements don't work in emails, because most email clients block these for security reasons. You can use a GIF to add animations.
  • Images: many clients only display images once the recipient grants permission. Therefore, don't put important information in images alone — also include it as plain text, so something is always immediately visible.
  • Size of your email: an email that's too large may be clipped in the inbox. Gmail sometimes automatically cuts off long emails. Xendy automatically compresses images and monitors file size, so your email remains fully visible.

Formatting challenges in Outlook

Outlook is known for its limited support of modern formatting. Two common issues:

  • Rounded buttons: Outlook can't render these properly. Xendy automatically converts them to a small image, so the button looks great in every client.
  • Thin white lines: these sometimes appear randomly throughout an email, due to the way Outlook renders tables and borders. Xendy can't fully fix this, but you can prevent them from standing out by using a white background in your design.

Why these limitations exist

Email was originally designed as a simple text-based communication tool. Many email clients still run on that old foundation and have added extra security to fight spam and viruses. That's why the possibilities are more limited compared to websites.

What does this mean for you?

Xendy has solved most email design limitations and makes sure your emails are safe and easy to read in every client. That said, your design might not look exactly the same everywhere — that's totally normal and something every company sending emails has to deal with.

Frequently asked questions

Email was originally designed as a simple text-based communication tool. Many email clients still run on that old foundation and have added extra security to fight spam and viruses. That's why the possibilities are more limited compared to websites, and why an email can look slightly different from one client to another.

Every client reads emails in its own way, which means a design can look slightly different everywhere. An email that looks sharp on an iPhone might shift around or display less nicely in Outlook. Xendy takes as many of these limitations into account as possible, so your email looks as good as it can on both desktop and mobile.
